Good hijab colour care is what separates a hijab that stays vibrant for years from one that slowly fades. That sage green, that dusty rose — you chose those colours for a reason. Keeping them true takes just a few small habits done consistently.
Colour fades because washing strips dye from fabric fibres little by little. The good news is most of it is preventable.
Hijab colour care starts with cold water
Heat is the main culprit. Hot water loosens the fibres and dye washes out with it. Switch to 30°C or below and you’ll notice the difference over time — colours stay richer, longer.
Turn your hijab inside out
The outside surface takes the most friction in the machine. Flipping it inside out before washing is a two-second habit that protects the colour you actually see.
Keep darks and lights apart
Dark hijabs bleed colour slowly and silently. Your ivory won’t turn pink overnight — but over a few months it won’t quite be ivory anymore. Wash darks with darks, lights with lights.
Dry in the shade
Sunlight fades fabric faster than anything else. Even near a sunny window between wears adds up. Dry your hijabs somewhere shaded and well-ventilated — they’ll thank you for it.
Use a colour-protect detergent
It’s a small change that makes a real difference over many washes. Look for anything labelled “colour care” or “colour protect” — gentler on fibres, easier on dye.
Store away from light
Fading doesn’t only happen in the wash. An open shelf near a window will slowly dull your hijabs between wears. A drawer or covered shelf keeps colours true until the next time you reach for them.
These aren’t complicated steps — just small, consistent choices that keep your hijabs looking the way they did when you first chose them.
